Managing Oneself and Maximizing Your Team

This introductory level course explores the human capital side of management with a focus on paid staff and service volunteers. The course opens with an exploration of the nonprofit workplace and our 21st century society.

Through discussion of technology, diversity and inclusion, managing across the generations and the changing expectations of volunteers, the course establishes context as an important consideration for managing people. Students will explore what managers do and identify characteristics of an effective manager.

Using the framework of managing the work, managing people and managing oneself (Green and Hauser, 2012) students will examine principles and practices that lead to results in today’s nonprofit organizations. All students will engage in a final project to develop their own competencies as managers of staff and volunteers.
