EDPS 453 – Law, Policy, and Politics of Teachers Unions and Collective Bargaining

Description: This course introduces students to the major issues surrounding teachers unions and collective bargaining in education. Students will have the opportunity to examine collective bargaining from several different perspectives, including its history, the negotiation of collective bargaining agreements, different types of collective bargaining processes, and the effects of collective bargaining on a range of actors and institutions. Students also will have the opportunity to explore collective bargaining through concrete cases, such as Chicago. The course includes visits from experienced, high-level administrators and union leaders who have participated in collective bargaining in education and a mock bargaining session.
